Prepare Planting Site
- Before planting, remove all vegetation, including grass, from a 2-ft perimeter around the planting hole. Doing so reduces concealment cover for meadow voles, deer mice and gophers. Follow your nursery's recommendations to plant your seedlings paying special attention to sunlight requirements and field conditions.
Install Vole Guard
- Remove vole guard from package and uncoil to wrap around planted seedling. Next, push bottom-end into soil about an inch. Getting the vole guard about an inch into the soil stabilizes the guard and limits access from below by tunneling rodents.
Aftercare
- The best tree growers know that planting is only the beginning for your seedlings. To keep them growing healthy and strong. follow-up to ensure weeds are not shading out the seedlings and robbing them of nutrients and moisture - if you're using Water-Saver Weed Mats your trees will definitely have a head start! Also make sure the vole guard bottom-end is seated firmly in the soil about inch to limit access by tunneling rodents and other critters that feed on young trunks. And when your tree outgrow Vole-Guard, simply unwrap it from the stem to re-use on another planting or place it in your recycle bin to be recycled.
