Pennsylvania Riparian Planting Project Photos and narrative by Chris Siems
CREP Riparian project not far from Harrisburg, PA.
The goal of this project – and thousands like it – is to improve the water quality of the streams and rivers that ultimately feed into Chesapeake Bay.
Trees are planted to reduce soil erosion and stream sedimentation, and cattle are fenced out of the area to prevent stream bank collapse.
The trees planted are a mix of swamp white oak, red oak, sugar maple, American elm, river birch and white ash.
Spacing is 12’ x 12’.
The stakes are driven on the upstream side of the tubes, so that if the field is flooded the stake will protect the tube and seedlings from floating debris.
Project planners chose 4 foot Vented O-style Treeshelters from Plantra.
