Mississippi Wildlife Planting Photos by David Koch
Landowner David Koch is using Plantra Tree Tubes in 3 different settings on his property near Kiln, MS.
Here David is establishing a variety of hardwood species in an open field along the gravel drive in order to provide cover and travel corridors for wildlife and to create a tree-lined entry to the property.
18 inch seedlings were planted in 4 foot C-style tree tubes in March, 2008. These photos were taken June 11, 2008 – just three months later… several of the trees had already emerged from the tree tubes.
Notice the 6 foot diameter circle of weed control around each tube – this is a picture-perfect job of tree establishment!

David spreads granular fertilizer around the base of the tree tubes. Fertilizing young trees with a granular fertilizer, or with a fertilizer packet or tablet in the planting hole, is a great idea to make more nutrients available to the young roots.
Fertilizer and weed control must go hand in hand… without good weed control the fertilizer will go to the grasses and weeds. Because these plant roots are nearer to the surface than tree roots, they will absorb and use the nutrients from the fertilizer before your trees can.
The second way that David is using Plantra Tree Tubes is to establish clusters or individual trees of sawtooth oak in forest clearings.
Sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima) grows very quickly and produces large quantities of acorns at a very early age.
This is another cluster of sawtooth oak established in a forest clearing. Here again, David is doing everything right. The clearing is large enough so the sawtooths get plenty of sun, excellent weed control has been done around each tree, and granular fertilizer is placed around the base of each seedling.
The result: Many of the sawtooth oak seedlings are emerging from Plantra 3ft O-style Tree Tubes just 3 months after planting.
Here an individual sawtooth oak is being established in a forest clearing.
Planted as an 18” seedling in March the tree is already emerging from the tree tube in early June.
Bald cypress grows amazingly fast in Plantra Tree Tubes!
This is the 3rd way that David is using Plantra Tree Tubes on his property: to establish bald cypress trees along the lakeshore.
Planted as 12 to 15 inch seedlings in March 2008, many were emerging from 3ft O-style Plantra Tree Tubes on June 11, 2008!
