The first thing to notice about O-style tubes is that there are tie holes closer to one end than the other. The end with the tie holes closest to the end is the TOP of the tube.
1. Plant seedling
2. Drive stake 1 to 1.5 inches from base of seedling- on NORTH side of seedling (so it doesn't block sun)
3. Round out the tube by creasing in the opposite direction
4.Side branches - If your seedlings have side (lateral) branches, prune them off. DO NOT bend these upward to squeeze them into the tube (Figure 1).
5. Lower tube over stake and seedling. The stake should be outside the tube as seen in picture (Figure 2).
6. Thread ties through tie holes (in through the tie holes, around the stake, and back out the other tie hole)
7. Make sure base of tube is flush with ground line
8. Cinch ties tight
9. Apply Bird Netting - 4 and 5 foot Plantra Treeshelters come with purple netting that can be placed around the circumference of the treeshelter top. Use of this bird netting will prevent birds from nesting or becoming trapped in the treeshelter (Figure 3).
TIPS:
- The stake should be OUTSIDE the tube.
- Make sure that base of the tube is pushed slightly into the soil, or at least is tight against the soil.
- Mound loose soil around the base of the tube to a height of about 2 inches.
